In July last year, we were led to believe that Hizbollah's kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers led to the invasion of Lebanon. Things are rarely that simple....time for a recap, some naming and shaming and some Bible study
Remember 24th June 2006, when Israeli forces abducted two civilians, a doctor and his brother, from Gaza.
Remember 26th June 2006 when Palestinian commandos killed two Israeli soldiers and captured Israeli Corporal Gilad Shalit after tunnelling 300 yards into Israel from Gaza. The Palestinian captors demanded that Israel release all 95 Palestinian women and 313 youths under age 18 held in Israeli prisons in exchange for the release of Shalit. A total of over 9,500 Palestinians (excluding those who are Israeli citizens) were known to be held in Israeli prisons.
Remember 27th June 2006 when Israeli troops and armour moved in force into southern Gaza and a carnage began.
Remember 12th July 2006, when the Israeli air force killed a family of nine by dropping a 550lb bomb on a house in a residential area of Gaza City.
Remember 12th July 2006, when responding to atrocities in Gaza and the Israeli seizure of much of the Palestinian government leadership, the Lebanese Hezbollah militia engaged in border skirmishes with Israeli troops. In the ensuing battle, Hezbollah forces killed 3 Israeli soldiers and captured two. With Israeli forces in hot pursuit into Lebanon, another 5 Israeli soldiers died.
Remember 13th July 2006 when Israel Prime Minister Omert described the attack on army posts on the Lebanese border and the capture of the soldiers as an "act of war" by the government in Beirut and warned of a "very painful and far-reaching" response.
Remember 13th July 2006 when Israel responded with military assaults from the air, land, and sea into southern Lebanon.
Remember 15th July 2006, when at the G8 meeting Putin states 'In my judgment, the best way to stop the violence is to understand why the violence occurred in the first place.' While Prime Minister Tony BlairŪs spokesperson refused to condemn the Israeli actions. Instead he said it was žessential for the captured Israeli soldiers to be released and for all sides to act with constraint.Ó
Remember 18th July 2006, Israel Defence Force attacked a convoy of ambulances and trucks operated by the UAE Red Crescent.
Remember 20th July 2006, when Mr Blair demanded that Hizbullah stop firing rockets at Israel and release kidnapped Israeli soldiers: "If it [Israel's disproportionate response] is to stop it has to stop by undoing how it started and it started with the kidnap of Israeli soldiers and the bombardment of northern Israel and if we want this to stop that has to
Remember 21st July 2006,when the Guardian reports that žTony Blair is publicly highly supportive of Israel and has declined to call for an immediate ceasefireÓ.
Remember 24-26th July 2006 when Israel shelled unarmed UN posts, killing 4 observers and seriously injuring several. Israel also attacked two clearly marked Red Cross ambulances in Qana.
Remember 26th July 2006 when ten Lebanese ambulances bearing Red Cross markings were also targets.
Remember 26th July 2006 when Chief Rabbi jonathan Sacks declared in a march in London, žtoday we stand in solidarity with Israel, and rarely have I felt so proud of Anglo-Jewry as I have done these past few days÷. Why then does a people who have consistently said Yes to life and No to death, who have consistently said Yes to peace and No to terror, find itself today fighting in Lebanon and Gaza? The answer is so simple, yet so unbelievable, that we must hear it clearly and unequivocally: Israel is fighting today in Lebanon because six years ago it withdrew from Lebanon. Israel is fighting today in Gaza because one year ago it withdrew from Gaza".
Remember 30th July 2006 when Israel aircraft bombed a house in Qana, killing 28 including 16 children. Israeli claimed that Hizbollah rockets and fighters were in the vicinity, later proved untrue by Human Rights Watch who visited Qana on the same day and the next day.
Remember 31st July 2006 when UN today said it had "indefinitely postponed" moves to send an international stabilisation force to south Lebanon. Prime Minister Blair refused to endorse calls for an immediate unconditional ceasefire or to condemn the Israeli bombing as disproportionate.
Remember 12th August 2006, when Muslim organisations sent an open letter to Blair urging him to change his stand: žAs British Muslims we urge you to do more to fight against all those who target civilians with violence, whenever and wherever that happensÓ. [This letter may well have been the basis of his ire towards the Muslim Council of Britain]
Remember 14th August 2006, when UN Resolution 1701 for a ceasefire, first mooted on 11th August took effect. Over a thousand Lebanese were killed and subsequent reports indicated that 100,000 cluster bombs were dropped Ů with 90% in the last 72 hours of the conflict (The Guardian, 21st August 2006). Moreover, Israel made use of white phosphorus bombs (The Guardian, 23rd October 2006) forbidden in international law.

žPREPARATIONS FOR ISRAEL'S WAR IN LEBANON LAST SUMMER WERE DRAWN UP AT LEAST FOUR MONTHS BEFORE TWO ISRAELI SOLDIERS WERE KIDNAPPED BY HIZBULLAH IN JULY, EHUD OLMERT, THE PRIME MINISTER, HAS ADMITTED.
HIS SUBMISSION TO A COMMISSION OF INQUIRY, LEAKED YESTERDAY, CONTRADICTED THE IMPRESSION AT THE TIME THAT ISRAEL WAS PROVOKED INTO A BATTLE FOR WHICH IT WAS ILL-PREPARED. MR OLMERT TOLD THE WINOGRAD COMMISSION, A PANEL OF JUDGES CHARGED WITH INVESTIGATING ISRAEL'S PERCEIVED DEFEAT IN THE 34-DAY WAR, THAT HE FIRST DISCUSSED THE POSSIBILITY OF WAR IN JANUARY AND ASKED TO SEE MILITARY PLANS IN MARCH Ó. http://www.guardian.co.uk/syria/story/0,,2029732,00.html
So a neo-con grand plan, in which our Prime Minister was complicit, to knock out Hamas and Hizbullah, quell the insurgents in Iraq and then march on to Iran was put paid.
AND REMEMBER THIS
žAnd there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass÷And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of DavidÓ (OT: Samuel).
